VIMA MUSIC AWARDS 2026 Ushers in New Era for Gen Z Talent with The ‘VIMA PRODIGY AWARD’

​Kuala Lumpur, [14 October 2026] – The VIMA Music Awards, renowned for celebrating independent music across genres and borders, today announced a pivotal evolution of its youth recognition platform with the launch of The VIMA Prodigy Award for the 2026 ceremony.

This dynamic new category is specifically designed to recognize the extraordinary skill and musical maturity of Gen Z independent musicians under the age of 21.

Previous Winner of the VIMA Best College Act – Night Skies & Vision

Replacing the long-standing “Best College Act” category, The VIMA Prodigy Award is targeted at artists who display technical skill and complexity significantly beyond their years, often excelling in instrumentation or vocal ability. This change reflects VIMA’s commitment to championing emerging talent, regardless of their educational affiliation.

VIMA MUSIC AWARDS founder, Siva Zaphod Chandran, shared his excitement about the transition:

​”Among all our music awards categories, the one we really look forward to annually, is unearthing the young talents breaking into the music scene via our Best New Act and Best College Act. This time, we have decided to re-name the awards to reflect a whole new generation of Under 21 age group of young musicians and to expand the awards submissions regionally. This will ensure we catch the true prodigies who might be independent, active, and under 21, but not necessarily enrolled in a college program.”

​The Evolution of Youth Recognition

​While the previous “Best College Act” award successfully served as a launchpad for musicians originating from a college or university setting—including early careers of famous musicians such as An Honest Mistake, SOG (Sekumpulan Orang Gila), and Sada Borneo—The VIMA Prodigy Award broadens the scope.

It is open to all independent artists under 21 years old as of 2026, offering a more inclusive and expansive platform for the next generation of regional music stars.VIMA is exploring to open the category to musicians in the Southeast Asian region.

VIMA 2026: Expansion and Innovation

​The introduction of The VIMA Prodigy Award comes as part of VIMA’s larger comeback announcement for the 2026 event. VIMA is expanding its submission criteria to allow eligibility for songs of all languages released between 2020 and 2025.

True to VIMA’s history of embracing genre-bending categories, this year also sees innovation taken a step further with the introduction of two new categories that allow for AI-generated content in submissions by non-musicians/public.

Eligibility for The VIMA Prodigy Award:

• ​The artist or majority of the act must be under 21 years old as of 2026.
• ​The act must be independent (not signed to a major label).
• ​The music must showcase extraordinary technical skill and musical maturity.
